Step by Step
Summer Programs 2019
July 8th - August 16th

Social Skills Group

Mondays from 4:00-5:15 PM (Ages 5-7)

The Step by Step Social Skills group is offered for children who struggle to form positive and appropriate interactions with peers. This program benefits children who have verbal communication and an interest in friends, yet struggle with using language functionally, self-regulation, shyness, and other behaviors that may interfere with being in a group. A pediatric speech-language pathologist who has specialized training in working with children with social communication challenges will run the peer group of 4-6 children once per week for 60 minutes, using a social skills curriculum and wrapping up each session with a 15 minute parent training (total of 75 minutes), including tips for functional practice at home with family and friends. Children will have opportunities to problem solve, engage in perspective taking, and develop friendships within structured play routines. Developmentally appropriate strategies will be used to guide children through topics which may include the following: personal space, body language, communicating ideas/feelings, negotiating in play, sharing, conversational turn taking, conflict resolution, and being flexible.

Articulation Group

Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 PM (Ages 4-6)

This group speech therapy experience is geared toward children who will not receive school-based articulation services during the summer. Facilitated by a speech-language pathologist, children will participate in a variety of games, crafts, and language-based activities while practicing their individual sound targets. Home carryover activities will be provided each week to support additional practice and promote generalization of skills.
